God's Forever Gift of Godself
Examining the Roles of the Holy Spirit in Jn. 14-16
From: Loyola Papers Vol. 1 No. 1 (2020)
Abstract
This exegetical study examines the five paraclete sayings in the Farewell Discourse of John's Gospel (14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7-11, 16:13-15) to uncover the roles of the Holy Spirit under the organizing theme of Jesus's departure. Using narrative-literary and historical-critical methods, the author identifies sub-themes—intimacy, mission, and glorification—that structure the Spirit's activity as Spirit of Truth and Paraclete. The study argues that the rising tension across these sub-themes reveals a coherent Johannine theology in which the Spirit sustains the disciples' relationship with the Father and the Son despite loss, unbelief, and persecution. The article concludes that the Spirit continues to accompany the Church amid the ongoing themes of departure in the world today.
