In the Realm of Silence, I Long for the Missing
From: Loyola Papers Vol. 4 No. 1 (2023)
Abstract
In this reflective synthesis paper, the author draws on silence as a starting point for exploring three interrelated longings: for truth, for identity, and for belonging. Weaving together Scripture, Heraclitus, Descartes, Sartre, Buddhist teaching on the false and true self, and the Bhagavad Gita, the essay distinguishes the illusory, mask-wearing “Ego” from a vulnerable “true Self” discovered through humility, relationship, and self-awareness, arguing that human restlessness before the unknown and the missing is not a defect to be resolved but a permanent, grace-filled invitation to deeper authenticity, community, and openness to the Divine.
