Abstract

The question over the rights of the Filipino secular priests to the parishes was one of the issues which confronted the Philippine Church in the nineteenth century. Known as the “secularization controversy,” this conflict involving the Spanish regular clergy and the Filipino secular priests saw the emergence of Pedro Pablo Peláez as the leader of the Filipino clergy.
