Ready for a Theology of the Mind? Faith Response to the Mental Health Crisis
From: Loyola Papers Vol. 6 No. 2 (2025)
Abstract
This article argues for the development of a pastoral 'theology of the mind' as the Catholic Church's response to the mental health crisis in the Philippines, documenting systemic gaps in psychiatric care, pervasive stigma, and harrowing cases of neglect alongside biblical figures and the person of Christ who experienced psychological anguish. Surveying magisterial statements from John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, as well as diocesan initiatives such as the Diocese of Kalookan's mental health hotline, the authors call the Philippine Church to show the compassion of Jesus by destigmatizing mental illness, to proclaim Christ's healing power without reducing treatment to prayer alone, and to accompany sufferers through sustained pastoral presence alongside, not instead of, professional psychological and psychiatric care.
