Abstract

Revisiting Pope Francis' 2015 pastoral visit to the Philippines and his message of mercy, this paper reflects on how the Filipino Church can appropriate that message amid the 500th-anniversary celebrations of Christianity's arrival in the country. The author traces the Pope's vision of a missionary Church that 'goes forth' to the peripheries, drawing parallels with the pioneering missionaries who evangelized the islands, and situates this within Evangelii Gaudium's call to a poor Church for the poor, linking it to the Philippine Church's own 'option for the poor' articulated at the Second Plenary Council. The paper argues that embracing mercy as a decisive call to action, rather than mere sentiment, offers the Filipino Church a path toward a renewed, evangelizing identity for its second five hundred years.
