Abstract

Written in Filipino, this study examines the eighteenth-century prayer book Pagdedevocion at Pagsisiyam sa Cabanal-Banalang Ina ng Caliuanagan, a Marian devotion centered in Cainta, Rizal, that also transmits a full catechesis on grace according to Tridentine teaching. Tracing the devotion's origin to the vision of Our Lady of Light given to Fr. Giovanni Antonio Genovesi, S.J., in Sicily, the article analyzes how the prayer book's language, imagery, and petitions articulate a distinctly Filipino theology of grace as friendship (pakikipagkaibigan) with God mediated through Mary, countering emerging Pelagian tendencies of its time. The study argues that the text moved beyond mere translation to become an original Filipino theological expression, illustrating the principle of lex orandi, lex credendi, and offering a model of devotion as a source of contextual, inculturated Filipino Catholic theology.
